Congratulations to Dr. Kristina Kramarczuk! Kristina successfully defended her dissertation, “Enacting ‘Equitable’ Computer Science: How U.S. PK-12 District and School Leaders Interpret Educational Policy,” last Thursday in front of a large group of friends, family and colleagues in person and on Zoom. Kristina has worked with I4C as our Graduate Research Assistant since 2020 and has published multiple papers on equity in computing education as part of this role. During her time with I4C, Kristina took a leading role, revamping the training for our summer ambassadors and improving how we teach our K-12 summer programs. Now that she has completed her Ph.D. studies, Kristina will be starting full-time as an assistant clinical professor with First Year Innovation and Research Experience (FIRE). She designed a FIRE research stream called Computing & Society where students will learn about the relationship between data analysis and society.

Computer Science Education Week (CSEdWeek) takes place December 4-10, 2023. Throughout the week, the Iowa Governor’s STEM Advisory Council along with our many partners and schools throughout Iowa as well as all around the world will offer activities and programs to engage students in computer science education. With the overall demand for computer science jobs projected to increase by 22% by 2032, it is evident that computer science education is vital for our future workforce. The 2023 State of Computer Science Education report indicates 84% of public high schools in Iowa offer computer science, compared to 57.5% nationally. Iowa was also recently recognized as one of the top 10 states in computer science education for 2023 by Code.org. One of the many reasons this was possible is because of the strong partnerships that bring resources and opportunities to the educators and youth in Iowa.
