Iribe Initiative for Inclusion & Diversity in Computing

Happy April!

The Iribe Initiative for Inclusion and Diversity in Computing (I4C) and the Maryland Center for Women in Computing (MCWIC) have a lot of great programs, workshops, and events in store this month. In this month's newsletter, you will find the latest updates about our outreach workshops, programs, and events. We always strive to offer unique and engaging high quality programming for our K-12 community.

We are still accepting applications for our 2021 summer programs until April 4th. Our I4C Summer Academy offers our summer programs for elementary, middle, and high school students. K-12 Outreach Workshops
Workshops Wednesdays

Our new workshops series for all high school students explores computing concepts in programming languages, cybersecurity, web design, data science, and careers. This spring we've provided a dynamic virtual experience for all high school students while engaging in discussions, exercises, and activities in real world situations. We added new content related to college prep. Join us every Wednesdays at 4:00PM-5:00PM.

K-12 Outreach Programs

Rise Up 4 CS+ @ UMD

Are you taking AP Computer Science Principles (AP CSP) and need help with MIT App Inventor, JavaScript, Python, or other programing languages? Or are you taking AP Computer Science A (AP CSA) and need to deepen your knowledge of the Java programming language? Join the Rise Up 4 CS+ program (RU4CS) at UMD.

***UPDATE: Starting Spring 2021 we are accepting students enrolled in AP Computer Science Principals!***

RU4CS is for all high school students including those who identify as women, Black, Latinx, or American Indian, enrolled in either AP CSA (Java) or AP CSP during the 2020-2021 school year. 


We accept new students to our program on a rolling basis.

K-12 Outreach Events

The Women in Engineering Program in the A. James Clark School of Engineering at the University of Maryland is pleased to introduce:

Discover Engineering: Hosted by the Society of Women Engineers

Date: Sunday, April 18, 2021 @ 1:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m.
Audience:  High School Students
 
The University of Maryland student section of the Society of Women Engineers is hosting their annual Discover Engineering event on Sunday, April 18th, from 1-3pm.

The event will be held VIRTUALLY on zoom & will consist of fun activities such as major-specific discussions, bingo with student organizations, and a Q&A session! Discover Engineering is open to all prospective and admitted students. Parents are not required, but may attend if they wish to learn more about what the University of Maryland has to offer!

 

WIE Engineering Lunch Bunch
(virtual programming)


Geared toward middle school-aged girls, we will talk about engineering and share stories, ideas, and goals for the future! Attendees are welcome and encouraged to bring lunch, meet new friends, and chat!

Girls Talk Math

Girls Talk Math: For Rising 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th Graders (Virtual) 

July 19-30, 2021

Girls Talk Math is an online camp for 2021 that runs 2-4 p.m. on weekdays. Additionally, there will be special events on Saturdays such as panels and interviews with women mathematicians. Rising 9th to rising 12th grade students who attend high school within commuting distance of UMD can apply. Camp activities involve learning mathematics outside of the standard curriculum, attending mini lectures on math, as well as recording and publishing a podcast about a famous female mathematician. Registration is open.
