Iribe Initiative for Inclusion & Diversity in Computing

Happy New Year!

Welcome back to another year with the Iribe Initiative for Inclusion and Diversity in Computing (I4C) and the Maryland Center for Women in Computing (MCWIC). We have a lot of great programs, workshops, and events in stored for you starting February 1st. In this month's newsletter, you will find the latest updates about our Spring Outreach workshops, programs, and 2021 Summer Academy. We always strive to offer unique and engaging high quality programming for our K-12 community.

As a reminder, due to the effects of COVID-19 all of our programs for Spring and Summer 2021 will be offered online.

K-12 Outreach Workshops

Workshops Wednesdays

Our new workshops series for ALL high school students explores computing concepts in programming languages, cybersecurity, web design, data science, and careers. This spring we've provided a dynamic virtual experience for all high school students while engaging in discussions, exercises, and activities in real world situations. We have added new content related college prep. Join us every Wednesdays starting February 3rd at 4:00PM-5:00PM.

K-12 Outreach Programs

Creative Computing Program 
Are you looking for an enrichment program designed to provide students, in grades 4-8, experiences with computer science concepts?

Join us weekly starting February 1st

Grades 4-6 (Tuesdays)
Creating your own animation, story, and game development projects with Scratch
Grades 5-7 (Wednesdays)
Design dynamic web pages with HTML, CSS, & JavaScript
Grades 6-8 (Thursdays)
Create geometric art designs and more advanced projects using Python

Rise Up 4 CS+ @ UMD

Are you taking AP Computer Science Principles (AP CSP) and need help developing your program for the creative task? Or are you taking AP Computer Science A (AP CSA) and need to deepen your knowledge of the Java programming language?  Join the Rise Up 4 CS+ program (RU4CS) at UMD.

RU4CS is for high school students who identify as a woman or non-binary enrolled in either AP CSA (Java) or AP CSP during the 2020-2021 school year.
Participants have access to...

access to an online book 
one-on-one tutoring sessions
one-on-one project development sessions 
live interactive lessons taught by current UMD Computer Science students
cummunity building events & activities 


All RU4CS students who complete the program, participate in the research study, and submit their AP CSA or AP CSP scores by July 31, 2021 will receive up to $75 in a gift card. We accept new students to our program on a rolling basis.

Girls Who Code @UMD

We’re accepting applications for Spring 2021. Classes will be held on Sundays from 11:30 AM - 1 PM, starting January 31st to April 18th! This program is restricted to 6th - 12th grade students and will be held in a virtual environment.

We can't wait to have you in class! Please feel free to share this with as many girls as possible (your friends, classmates, siblings, etc)! No prior experience necessary.

HackBI is a student-run hackathon at Bishop Ireton High School. You'll have a 12 hour and 10 hour day to learn a variety of new things, collaborate, and make your idea come to life!
