The Iribe Initiative for Inclusion and Diversity in Computing (I4C) and the Maryland Center for Women in Computing (MCWIC) Spring Programs have come to a close. Thank you to all our students who have participated in our events this school year! 

In this month's newsletter, you will find the latest updates of other great summer programs, workshops, and events happening in our CS community. Here is a list of UMD Summer Camps.

This week is also Teacher's Appreciation Week. Thank you to all our Educators who support our programs, workshops, and events this year.

K-12 Outreach Events

The Women in Engineering Program in the A. James Clark School of Engineering at the University of Maryland is pleased to introduce:

WIE Change the World: An Introduction to Engineering
Rising 9th - 12th graders

Learn more!
This virtual program is geared toward high school-aged women who are considering majoring in engineering and potentially pursuing it as a career.  This week-long virtual program will introduce participants to the various disciplines of engineering through engaging lessons and lectures, hands-on activities, and conversations with faculty, staff, and students in the Clark School of Engineering.



How Can Data Predict What is Next?

Are you interested in how data can predict "what's next", create compelling arguments, or guide our actions and decisions? Then this summer experience might be for you! Data science demonstrates how we use data to characterize, visualize, and operationalize our decision-making processes . Modeling and analyzing data form the foundation of policies you are affected by, public planning you interact with, how economies operate, and more.

WIE Engineering Lunch Bunch
(virtual programming)


Join us for our last Lunch Bunch event on May 12th at 11:30 AM-12:15 PM. Geared toward middle school-aged girls, we will talk about engineering and share stories, ideas, and goals for the future! Attendees are welcome and encouraged to bring lunch, meet new friends, and chat!   

All WIE Engineering Lunch Bunches will take place virtually via Zoom!

Pathways High School Internship Program
Interest Form Dates: May 3 – May 7, 2021
Pathways Program Dates: July 6 – August 12, 2021

Comcast NBCUniversal is launching an Interest Form for their Pathways High School Internship Program! The Interest Form is currently open and will close Friday, May 7th!  If you submit an interest form, please let us know by emailing inclusion@cs.umd.edu! Also, below you will find some additional information on Pathways.

Pathways Overview: Comcast’s Pathways Internship is a 6-week program developed to expose high school juniors and seniors to the day-to-day operations of a Fortune 40 media and technology company.  The experience at Comcast will help students cultivate meaningful relationships, develop strong interpersonal and business skills, and offer mentorship opportunities with members of Comcast’s technology team. As part of the Pathways Program, students will get to know Comcast and learn about our products and services while working on innovative, thought-provoking projects in cutting-edge technologies alongside a team of supportive, full-time Comcast employees.

Interested in submitting an Interest Form? Pathways is intended for rising juniors and seniors at any high school, including, but not limited to, students who identify as members of any historically underrepresented group in the technology industry, such as Black, Hispanic, Native American, women and students with disabilities. You should be at least 16 years old, be able to work 20 hours per week for the duration of the 6-week program, and be eligible to work in the United States.


 

Girls Talk Math

Girls Talk Math: For Rising 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th Graders (Virtual) 

July 19-30, 2021
Deadline: June 1st

Girls Talk Math is an online camp for 2021 that runs 2-4 p.m. on weekdays. Additionally, there will be special events on Saturdays such as panels and interviews with women mathematicians. Rising 9th to rising 12th grade students who attend high school within commuting distance of UMD can apply. Camp activities involve learning mathematics outside of the standard curriculum, attending mini lectures on math, as well as recording and publishing a podcast about a famous female mathematician. Registration is open.

Already signed up for Youthworks? Awesome! Join and get paid with our CodeWorks program, a 6-week virtual coding boot-camp! If you are a Baltimore city youth between the ages of 14-21 who wants to get paid to learn tech industry skills, you don’t want to miss out on this opportunity! No prior experience is needed.
