Our Sprinternship™ program through Break Through Tech offers quick and immersive paid internships to give you work experience and a tech-industry résumé credential that can help you land your first summer tech internship.
Sprinternships™ are focused on women, nonbinary individuals, and other underrepresented groups who are current first- or second-year students at the University of Maryland.

Sprinternships™ are designed by the organizations that host them, so each experience is unique. All Sprinternships™ enable students to:
- Tackle a real business challenge while immersed in your host company’s culture.
- Strengthen your professional network and connections in the tech community.
- Gain a resume credential and the real-world experience you need to land a summer tech internship.
Frequently Asked Questions
Here are the eligibility requirements for our Sprinternship program:
- First- or second-year degree-seeking undergraduates at UMD in Fall 2024 or part of the Freshman Connection program
- Focus on women and nonbinary students and other underrepresented groups in tech, but all students are welcome to apply
- Minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA (for continuing students)
- Do not receive an early warning grade in fall 2024 computing class(es) (for first-semester students)
- Currently or previously enrolled in at least one (preferably two) computing course(s) (or have received equivalent AP or transfer credit): BMGT 302, CMSC 106, 122, 125, 131 or higher, INST 123, 126 or higher, IMDM 127 or higher, ENME 202 or higher, GEOG 276 or higher, or PHYS 265
- Eligible to work in the United States in January 2025, including at UMD
- Must reside in the United States in January 2025
- Must be 18 years of age or older by November 4, 2024
- Able to work a standard 40-hour workweek for the duration of the Sprinternship (no other classes or employment)
- Priority given to students who participated in Guild
- Have not previously had a computing internship, Sprinternship or job
No, the Sprinternship program is exclusively for undergraduate students who have not previously held a computing internship, Sprinternship or job.
You must reside in the U.S. during your Sprinternship.
Very few virtual options are available; most Sprinternships will require you to commute three to five days per week to a workplace in the Maryland/DC/Northern Virginia area. If selected for the program, you can indicate your preferred location, but it is not guaranteed.
Housing and transportation are not provided, though we can help with metro cards and public transportation assistance.
You cannot take a class or have other work obligations during the Sprinternship.
