Summer Academy Info & Assistance

Welcome and Overview

The Iribe Initiative for Inclusion and Diversity in Computing and the Maryland Center for Women in Computing are excited to welcome you to our virtual camp. This page is designed to answer any questions you may have as well as provide you with information on our summer programs.

All summer programs will be held in-person at the Brendan Iribe Center for Computer Science and Engineering. All instructional lessons and resources will be found on the University of Maryland’s ELMS online learning management system. 

 

All participants must complete the following steps:

GROUP TRANSPORTATION:

If you want to coordinate group transportation from getting from the airport or neighborhood feel free to use the google forms below. I4C Staff will not be part of this process and will not assume any responsibility for the plans created by parents.

Computing Instructors

Computing Instructors are current University of Maryland students majoring in a computing-related degree. Our computing instructors have received comprehensive training in effective lesson development, equity and inclusion, classroom management, and student engagement to best lead our programs. Abbas Islaw

Abbas is a rising sophomore pursuing a computer science degree. Outside of school, he enjoys playing with his cats, playing video games, and watching anime! He's excited to teach and guide students this summer!

 

Abel Philip

Abel is a rising sophomore majoring in computer science + Machine Learning, and part of the ACES honors minor program. Apart from coding and debugging, he enjoys drawing and reading about tech. He is looking forward to working with the Iribe Initiative for Inclusion and Diversity in Computing to foster and share his passion for technology with everyone.

 

Amber Melton

Amber is a sophomore at UMD, majoring in computer science with a passion for math and a focus on data science. She enjoys working on arts and crafts as well as being engrossed in her studies, and is excited to share her love for computer science with students this summer :)

 

Anh Le

I’m a rising sophomore, majoring in computer science at UMCP, and interested in data science and AI/robotics. My hobbies are food, music, and anime/manga. This is my first time as an instructor, so I’m looking forward to meeting you all and having a fantastic summer together.

I'm going to be a rising sophomore and will be a computer science major at UMD, with a concentration in machine learning. I love to game, and work out, nice to meet everyone.

 

Elizabeth Casey

Elizabeth is a rising sophomore studying Computer Science at UMD and heading to focus on Cybersecurity. She is also a part of UMD's Science and Global Change Scholars community. In her free time she is a movie buff and enjoys reading, playing video games, and soccer!

 

Enric Jiao

I am Enric Jiao, a sophomore computer science major at the University of Maryland. I grew up in Ellicott City and took my first computer science class as a freshman in high school. I am highly interested in many STEM fields including mathematics, physics, and of course computer science. In my free time, I enjoy running, skiing, snowboarding, and playing tennis. I have a one year old German Shepherd named Echo.

 

Lia Arakal

My name is Lia Arakal and I am a sophomore computer science major here at UMD. My focus is currently on Artificial Intelligence. My hobbies include going to local concerts, reading, and being involved with my community! I am excited to be a computing instructor this summer!

 

Ricky Li

Hello everyone! My name is Zirui Li but I usually go by "Ricky" as that is my nickname. I am a rising sophomore majoring in Computer Science at the University of Maryland and specializing in the fields of AI and Machine Learning. My favorite hobbies include playing basketball and swimming and just hanging out with my friends. I am very excited to spend my summer as a computing instructor and I cannot wait to meet my students!

 

Takeshi Sui

Takeshi is a rising Junior majoring in Computer Science at the University of Maryland and minoring in Philosophy. Outside of school, Takeshi enjoys watching sports and movies. After graduating, he hopes to become a high school Computer Science teacher in the DC area.

Hello! I’m Tim, and I am a rising sophomore majoring in Computer Science at UMD. I’m a huge nerd, so I love to learn and am more than happy to talk/learn about anything. In my free time, I like to dance to kpop, watch movies/tv shows, and bake. Overall, I am super excited to be a Computing Instructor and am looking forward to working with you!

As an undergraduate computer science major at UMD, I love solving logical problems and developing new skillsets. With each endeavor I take in computer science, I wish to not only enhance my abilities but also spread positive influence to others.

I'm a rising Junior with a major in Computer Science and a minor in Linguistics. I am most interested in Natural Language Processing and Machine Learning. At UMD, I am part of I4C, the Skateboarding Club as well as the Delta Sigma Phi Fraternity. In my free time, I enjoy reading, skateboarding and programming some of my personal projects. I look forward to meeting everyone and developing our interests in Computer Science.

Cyber Defense Instructor

Toby Lin

Toby is the co-founder and Chief Technology Officer of Cyber Skyline, a leading cybersecurity skills evaluation platform used by firms such as CrowdStrike, Pinterest, and Synchrony Financial along with over 500 colleges and universities across the U.S. each year. Toby also serves as an instructor in the Advanced Cybersecurity Experience for Students (ACES) Honors College program at the University of Maryland.

  2. What do I use ELMS for?
    • ELMS will be our integrated learning environment. All camps will have their own ELMS site. All emails, communication, content, and interactions will go through ELMS.
  3. How do I use ELMS?
    • Access your summer program under courses.
    • Learn more about ELMS here.
  4. How do I access ELMS?
    • ELMS can be accessed here.
  5. Do I input the student's name or my name when signing up for ELMS?
    • Parents/Guardians should input their names when signing up for ELMS. Once added to the system, you can then later change your name to the student's name.
  6. Is multi-factor authentication needed to login into ELMS?
    • No, multi-factor authentication will not be needed, unless you a creating an Affiliate Account for the Cyber Defense program
  7. What is the difference between affiliate and associate accounts? 
    • Affiliate Accounts are created by our team and are only used by Cyber Defense students.
    • Associate Accounts are self-created.

    • CampDoc is our student information management system. Please complete the Health Profile for each child.

    • If you child has asthma pr allergies, please complete the Asthma or Allergy Action Plan found on pages 12-14
